Tips from the American Red Cross on
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F....

The 5th & Lincoln Avenue intersection will be closed from on or about January 21st for approximately two months to install storm sewer pipe as well as lower water lines and install inlets. The project continues north on Lincoln Avenue to 1st street with a new trunk line so there will be additional block closures North as the project continues. The contractor, King’s Trucking will be working as fast as possible to get this intersection opened back up.
With the Lincoln Avenue storm water project there will be inconveniences for larger trucks that may make deliveries in town to the north end. We will establish an alternate route of M Street West to S Street on 4th Street as a way to get larger vehicles around the Lincoln Avenue Intersection. There will be temporary no parking along different sections of 4th Street. This is a much needed infrastructure improvement to remove the storm water on the north end of town that was included in our approved compliance plan with Indiana Department of Environmental Management to reduce or prevent sanitary sewer inflow and infiltration to Spider Creek lift station with the goal with other projects to eliminate prohibited sanitary sewer overflows. We will compile an email list to get information out as needed for businesses and residents in the area if you would like to give me an email address to send updates. My email is madams@bedford.in.us if you want to send me your email. If you have any concerns or questions please contact me at 812-278-4371 or Mike Reynolds who is the storm water coordinator at 812-788-0303.

The City of Bedford Utilities will be in your neighborhood conducting sewer line cleaning and inspections. Door hanger notices will be placed on residences the day before or around cleaning day if at all possible. Yard signs will also be in your neighborhood. The sanitary sewer lines are cleaned using high performance sewer cleaning equipment. A cleaning nozzle is propelled from one manhole to the next using water under high pressure. The nozzle is then pulled back to the starting manhole. As the nozzle is pulled back, water scours the inside of the sanitary sewer pipe. Any debris in the pipe is pulled back with the water. The debris is removed from the manhole with a vacuum unit. If roots are found, they are cut with a root cutter. This process is repeated on every sewer line cleaned. The main is also recorded with a camera and an assessment of the main and manholes conditions are recorded in order to assist in needed improvements.
The cleaning process causes a vacuum in the sewer. This will not affect most homes, but some homes may be affected that have inadequate or partially blocked drain vents or no backwater valves. The vacuum may cause “P-traps” (the little S shaped bend in the pipe under sinks and drains) to be sucked dry. Should you notice a sewer smell resulting from this, run a little water in your drains to refill the P-traps. During the process, residents might experience a rumbling sound, in addition to the possibility of water entering the sink, bathtub or toilet. It is recommended that you shut the water valve off to your toilet(s), put the toilet seat(s) down and cover floor drains with car mats on the days that the sewer cleaning is scheduled. This will minimize any possible splashing of the P-trap water in homes that are poorly vented.
The precautions are recommended only during our working times of 7 am until 330 pm and dependent upon weather and the time of year. Residents can put things back as they were when the equipment has moved off their block.
The link identifies the sewer shed map and the estimated time frame....
