Drinking Water Notice
Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR)
Reporting Requirements
Large and small public water systems (PWSs) subject to UCMR 5 (i.e., community water systems (CWSs) and non-transient non-community water systems (NTNCWSs)) are required to notify customers about their UCMR 5 results.
Bedford City Utilities PWS #5247001 collected samples under the U.S. EPA Unregulated Contaminants Monitoring Rule (UCMR) for 29 PFAS Compounds and Lithium. This monitoring is conducted in compliance with reporting of the data requirements to determine what, if any additional compounds may need to be regulated in drinking water in the future. We collected samples on 3/6/2023, 6/12/2023, 9/11/2023, and 12/11/2023 and detected zero contaminates in our finished drinking water. However, these compounds are not regulated at this time.
If you would like to review the results, contact Bedford City Utilities at 812-275-1626 or email madams@bedford.in.gov
As a Public Water System (PWS), we are required to notify our customers that the UCMR results are available (40 CFR 141.207) no later than 12 months after they are known. Results are to be delivered to all billing customers each year by July 1 (40 CFR 141.204[d]). For more information, please contact the public water system: Bedford City Utilities at 812-275-1626. This notice is being sent to you by: Bedford City Utilities PWS #5247001 Misty Adams, Utilities Director

Tips from the American Red Cross on
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F....

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law on March 27, 2020, helping ease some of the financial pressures facing Americans in the wake of COVID-19. If you have been impacted by COVID-19 and meet the eligibility requirements, the Act allows more access to retirement savings.
We appreciate this is a challenging situation and you may need access to your retirement savings, however it’s important to weigh the immediate benefit of taking a plan distribution with the long-term consequences of depleting your retirement savings.

The City of Bedford Utilities will be in your neighborhood conducting sewer line cleaning and inspections. Door hanger notices will be placed on residences the day before or around cleaning day if at all possible. Yard signs will also be in your neighborhood. The sanitary sewer lines are cleaned using high performance sewer cleaning equipment. A cleaning nozzle is propelled from one manhole to the next using water under high pressure. The nozzle is then pulled back to the starting manhole. As the nozzle is pulled back, water scours the inside of the sanitary sewer pipe. Any debris in the pipe is pulled back with the water. The debris is removed from the manhole with a vacuum unit. If roots are found, they are cut with a root cutter. This process is repeated on every sewer line cleaned. The main is also recorded with a camera and an assessment of the main and manholes conditions are recorded in order to assist in needed improvements.
The cleaning process causes a vacuum in the sewer. This will not affect most homes, but some homes may be affected that have inadequate or partially blocked drain vents or no backwater valves. The vacuum may cause “P-traps” (the little S shaped bend in the pipe under sinks and drains) to be sucked dry. Should you notice a sewer smell resulting from this, run a little water in your drains to refill the P-traps. During the process, residents might experience a rumbling sound, in addition to the possibility of water entering the sink, bathtub or toilet. It is recommended that you shut the water valve off to your toilet(s), put the toilet seat(s) down and cover floor drains with car mats on the days that the sewer cleaning is scheduled. This will minimize any possible splashing of the P-trap water in homes that are poorly vented.
The precautions are recommended only during our working times of 7 am until 330 pm and dependent upon weather and the time of year. Residents can put things back as they were when the equipment has moved off their block.
The link identifies the sewer shed map and the estimated time frame....
